How to Spot and Treat Diaper Rash 🧐

Diaper rashes are common and are easy to spot and treat. They look like red patches around the baby’s diaper area and are sometimes raised and warm to touch.

Why do diaper rashes happen?

The main reason is due to irritation caused by moisture and friction in wet diapers. Other reasons could include sensitive skin, new foods or products, and improper diaper fitting.

How do I prevent or treat a diaper rash?

1. Keep your baby clean and dry all the time. Change the diaper frequently and wipe your baby’s bottom gently with alcohol-free wipes or with a clean washcloth and water. Before putting on a new diaper, make sure your baby is already dry by patting the area (do not rub).

Parents may be inclined to used baby powder but physicians do not recommend powder anymore as baby powder could irritate the baby’s lungs. 🙅‍♀️

2. When putting on a new diaper, make sure the diaper is not too tight. Parents can check if the previous diaper was fitted too tightly if there are marks around the baby’s legs and waist. Adjust accordingly and if the diaper still does not fit, then it is time to size up.

3. Use barrier pastes. Parents should look for creams and ointments that contain zinc oxide. Zinc soothes the skin and prevents contact with feces and other irritants.

Parents should avoid products that contain fragrances or alcohol. They cause irritation and dryness and are completely unnecessary. Stick to mild soap, water, water based wipes, and hypoallergenic products. 🛀
